5 Reasons Why I Still Miss Singapore

It has been 5 months since we moved to the US. The days of packing, shipping, and unpacking are finally over. Our new apartment is now full and to some extent 'Marie Kondo'ed to make it livable. We spent the first few months exploring places, meeting people, learning driving, and actively involving us in every way to make us feel at home. Now with everything set for a routine, I am reminded of home. Not my homeland, but the home we had been nestling safely for a few solid years. How do you feel thinking about your high school friends? You were so close then but out of contact now. Well, we felt that way. We moved out of Singapore after living there for almost eight years. To many, Singapore is a tiny island located on the far end of the Malaysian Peninsula, but to us, the Lion city is more like a dear friend we miss and hope to see it another time. The least I can do is to cherish the evergreen memories of this country and pay a tribute through my words.

Singapore Aerial View, Reasons miss singapore

Singapore, as you may know, is a city-country in Southeast Asia, and its geography is so small it is just a dot on the world map. Decades back, we knew nothing much about Singapore other than their famous perfumes, Tiger Balm and Axe oils. So imagine our surprise the first time we landed on the island city. Whoah! It is a First world country and there's no denying it. The country is built with an infrastructure of top-notch quality and roads squeaky clean. Being the young and naive couple, It was like a fresh start for us on a strange island.

You might question what is so captivating about a tiny city? What is so special in an economy with a boring urban lifestyle? As a tourist, you need a maximum of five days to see all the attractions. For a long term resident, the city is not fascinating anymore. The trains are crowded; tall buildings surround us everywhere and the cost of living is so high. Despite these complaints, I can still reason out why we miss the little red dot, Singapore.

1. Walks and Parks: Newton has stated three laws of motion. In metros like NewYork, Hongkong, Tokyo, there is a fourth law, the walking law. Walk. Walk, Walk! Walking is the norm when you live in these places. In Singapore, it is no different either. All the highways have designated paths for both pedestrians and bicyclists. From grabbing a coffee to shopping at H&M, you have to walk everywhere even if you own a damn car. It was very tiring initially but over the years we got the hang of it. We became more active and physically fit. Thirty-year-old me running a half marathon would never have happened if I had not stepped out of cushy couches and learned to embrace walking.

People in Metro, Singapore

Then there are parks. Across the island, there are more than 300 parks and almost 50 percent of the country is covered with greenery. In weekends, neighborhood parks are our leisure places where we ride bicycles, take quiet strolls and occasionally fly kites. Parks are also the runner's den. You can always see a group of joggers even in the wee hours. Yes, the country is absolutely safe to step outside any time and some shops are open 24x7. I used to run in the nearby park many times past midnight. And nothing drives me faster to slumberland than an exhausting workout, aching calves, and a hot shower. I can assure you will sleep like a log. LifeProTip: Get a pair of good sports shoes and step outdoors. Nature will amaze you!

2. Food Paradise:
There is no sincere love than the love of Food ~ G.B.Shaw
Who doesn't love food? Food gives you fond memories and to a food fanatic, this is your dreamland. From Thai cuisines, Nasi lemak, Indian curries to Fish head soup you have them all here. Some are uniquely Singaporean such as the traditional kaya breakfast set. You can't live here without having this for breakfast or a quick snack. We miss it so much when traveling overseas, our first instinct when we land at Changi airport is to sit at the famous 'Yakun Kaya Toast' and savor this meal. The set consists of toasted crunchy bread filled with kaya jam and butter served with soft cooked eggs and a drink. Dip the bread into the running yolk stirred in with the right amount of pepper and soy sauce and slurp it down with a hot Teh C. All the travel fatigue and insomnia will wash away when this whole combo hits your gut with instant gratification that makes you feel "Okay, we're home"

True it is not only the palate but the mind that connects with food. That is the reason we prefer to cook food at home most of the times and only on special occasions, dine at restaurants. However, one exception is the 'Hawker center' under HDBs. A 'kampong' for the food courts in the mall. Hawker centers are mostly located in a casual setting and serve more like an extended home dining. The food has authentic flavors, cooked and delivered with a human touch. And I can tell you why. My office had a small coffee shop nearby. The Auntie who runs it knows only Mandarin with some broken English and all the Mandarin I know is Ni Hao. Yet she tries to small talk through animated gestures every time we meet. Between me trying to make sense of her speech and she juggling with her other orders, my tea is ready in the most perfect way I desire it to be. Its a Teh C Siew Dai (Hot tea with evaporated milk and lesser sugar). And I remember her taking my order only the first time I came here. Think about it, coffee breaks can be heartwarming too.

3. 'Chope'ing: I cannot visualize Singapore without its choping culture. Chope is a custom by which you can reserve seats by merely placing a tissue packet at a food center. Nobody dares to sit there, the seat stays forbidden till the owner of that tissue claims it. The whole choping process resonates with the nation itself. I admit I have done a few times too. But some people go to extreme levels of choping. You can find business cards, office ID tags, car keys even smartphones used as a chope. Seriously, you don't mind keeping an iPhone to hold your seat? I am speechless. Although there is an ongoing debate on whether "To chope or not to chope?", I can only assume it will take years to uproot it entirely from the system, a possibility only when we reach the end of the human race. #chopeit #chope
The Singapore Chope #chopeit

Similar to choping is their queueing culture. There is a strong belief. The longer the queue better the food or the product. One can affirm Singaporean queuing is an art, as they do it so nicely and fall in place naturally. I am not joking. I have seen long queue lines of people waiting for more than two hours without a hint of tiredness or impatience. A rare incident happened in 2000 when McDonald's had a Hello Kitty promotion. The queues started pouring before sunrise and continued till midnight. When they ran out of stock, the situation went out of control and resulted in some fist fights too. All these chaos for a small plush toy. Imagine how competitive it will be for the rest of the stuff!

4.Travel at ease:
I am not a fan of buses, nor cars as the constant movements give me motion sickness. I had no choice here but to use public transport. To my relief, public transport here is much comfortable, especially MRT. Although not so fast as the Shinkansen bullet trains in Japan, the Singapore MRT does a pretty good job carrying an average of 3 million people every day. The trains are on time and hassle-free, helping many skip the morning traffic during peak office hours.
“A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation.”~ Gustavo Petro
I use MRT to reach my workplace, mostly my travel accompanied by silence. In the MRT, commuters tend to spend time by scrolling their phones, playing online games or watching some Korean soaps. The chatty ones must be either the tourists or old Aunties. Coming from India, I find it so odd to see fellow travelers minding their own businesses with least interest for small talks. In our country, people start talking the moment they sit together. It is more of an obligation to talk until they know each other's common interests, political stands, family, ancestry, and continue until they part with teary-eyed goodbyes. I agree that is too much drama. But I hope a smile or a tiny nod is no harm and might add some warmth to anybody's day. Why not try it lah?

5. To each his own:
A child has the freedom to cry when it misses something or someone. Well, as an adult, you cannot cry nor express your longing for home. Singapore being a multiracial and multicultural country, relieves that yearning and gives a bit of home experience to everyone residing here. There are tiny clusters of spaces for each race and culture: Chinatown for the traditional Chinese, Little India for the Indians, Geylang for the Malays, Dempsey Hill for the Westerners and Bugis for the Indonesians. Here you can visit religious deities, shop and dine your native specialties and meet similar people. The country celebrates Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali and other festivals with such pomp and decor, you will be caught in the festive spirit on all seasons. In spite of the occasional tensions amidst the various ethnic groups, I do believe that they all enjoy having a space of their own.

My family loves to travel and we have frequented most of the neighboring countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hongkong. In comparison, Singapore is quite similar to its Asian counterparts on aspects of culture and lifestyle. Yet the Lion city is unique in the way it accommodates outsiders, maintains a self-sufficient economy, ensures safety round the clock and creates a niche on its own.
How to be a Local - Starter Pack:
1. Speak Singlish
2. Sport a casual Tee and shorts
3. Go crazy for the Salted Egg potato crisps.
Welcome to Lion City!
The country has certain drawbacks too. Some people can be xenophobic, complaining and materialistic. People and the Media are controlled and must adhere to stringent laws. Regardless of these shortcomings, one can only say Singapore is a Home away from Home.

It is now February and Valentine's day is around the corner. This is the time of the year to remind our loved ones how precious they are in our lives and remember the places that made these memories possible.  Singapore certainly holds a fair share of our experience and this tiny red dot will always be my valentine:)

Why every house needs a bookcase?

Early days, print forms have been our only reliable source of news, lauded for years. But now technology has made us want anything on a click and a touch. Information is bombarded from all corners, thus making our reading effortless and devoid of learning.

Can we turn the tables? Hell no! I can't keep my phone down even for a second. But we gotta change too. So how to make our millennials take a nose-dive to loving books?

Why we don't read?
In our free time,  browse youtube videos or , might even cry over the sloppy serials. But do we really enjoy it? Tv and gaming are a momentary craving like the potato chip, you can’t just stop at one :) And you get nothing but strained knuckles and myopic eyes. But a book is different. It is a lifetime friend that fills you with unique experiences, where all the characters come alive and enthrall us into a surreal world. Dare flip a page?

Mom: Wherever we keep the money, our son steals it. I don't know what to do about it, where do I keep the money?
Dad: Keep it in his books. He never touches them :) ~ wattpad

Smart Watch: It's High Time You Had One

Watch - A fancy, tiny timepiece to alert your day, and the safest thing you can buy without worrying on the sizes or the price tag (unless you're a Rolexian or TagHeurian). Back in the 80s, it was every kid's fetish to wear a watch to school, all the more fun if digital. It was a luxury in our simple lives where there were no rushes nor deadlines. It seems now outlandish to have lived in an era of zero urgency and utter calmness. Haha:)

Talking of History, the technology behind the earliest pocket watches until now, has been through ample progressions without much ado. Surprised? Yes, the first wristwatch was worn by the Queen of England, Elizabeth I in the 16th century even before Computers came in. Indeed, Time has travelled a lot !!! With the new age buzzwords 'smart', 'data', 'digital', Watches are also progressing into wearables and I can assure you, your wrist time in future will last longer than a glance.

Smart Watches

The market today for smartwatches is picking up. They are way more advanced compared to the 2010s integrated with mobile apps and Web OS in addition to the basic heart rate monitors, activity trackers, and calorie counters.

Sure enough, these 'watch phones' will be the second screen to our already disrupted lives of mobile notifications. And it is not cheap either. Is it really worth the buy? Do we need a watchbot? Keep up the pace and scroll down for more.

The age of Sousveillance:

A stalker for your own self. Wiki defines Sousveillance as the recording of an activity by a participant, typically by way of small wearable or portable personal technologies. Yes you heard it right, Sousveillance can be a subset of surveillance, and with these tracking devices, you are becoming your own spy. Hi there, James Bond.

In the smart ecosystem, you are aware of everything you do. And your whole existence is recorded. There are chunks of data about you. Are they really useful? maybe or maybe not. But for certain, the comfort level with a smaller, portable watch, is much better than holding the phone for hours and unlocking for every alert.

Health Gurus:

Do you feel all fit, healthy and happy? if you do, type a CAPTCHA and prove you are not a robot. lol;) True enough, urbanites are tuned to do anything labelled healthy. All the more reason for you to join this smart bandwagon.

Fun fact, my smartwatch tracked my sleep into stages as REM, non REM, light, deep sleep all the while me dreamily dozing off on the same old bed I had for years. Thank you, tracker, for pointing out I had poor sleep! I am figuring out now ways to reach your targets.

So the plus part, with these wearables, you can stay active, count your daily steps and keep your body fit. You might even take a double take to order your favourite frappe. But how far will it improve your overall health and lifestyle is quite debatable.

Productivity Tool:

Missing deadlines? Then this is your best bet. Schedulers, alarms and calendars can assist you on the go. At office meetings, you can avoid the awkward glares you get now while sneak peeking your phone every 2 minutes. With Emails and texts at your finger taps, you get better "connected" at work.

Can Smartwatch be the future corporate tool? chances are they might be.

Microsoft has plunged already with its Apps packaged into the Apple and Android wear. Samsung’s Galaxy Gear and the Pebble smartwatches also allow users to perform Salesforce-related tasks and notes at Evernote to clinch those sales deals.

I guess in future, we can expect Project PPTs rendered through watches and lessen the need for laptops and tablets. Business owners and enterprises might as well engage wearables into their work culture. Let's wait to see.

Fashion Trendsetter:

The earliest smartwatch models released were either chunky or lacked style. It was way more embarrassing to sport in public. Maybe the makers were too stubborn to serve function over fashion. Glad these designs have evolved and the big players took notice of it.

On the style quotient, Google's Android Wear is starting to catch up. The Apple Watch will remain the wearable of choice for their brand loyalists.
No one even questions the appropriateness of fashion-forward women wearing a chic looking Apple Watch anymore - Ariel Adams @aBlogtoWatch
Besides these, traditional watch industries like Fossil, Mondaine, Casio have upped them with their 'Hybrid Designs' that are both chic and smart. Fashion and Form is getting fused with even more luxury options (including diamonds) for the style crazy and no longer out of place in this industry.

Worth the Buy?

Smartwatch serves more than timekeeping. However, it is prone to get software issues, bugs, hardware failures and needs charging once in two days. Note down, there can be extra costs for accessories. The price too varies largely. You can get a cheapest at 50 bucks and go way higher 1000+ based on the brand you select.

The recent entry to the market is the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 priced pretty high at $1,650 (£1,400). The Swiss makers believed if 56,000 people bought their model, then the cost might be worth it this time.

On the whole, a competent digital watch, unless fully used, will be just another digital device with overwhelmed functionalities.

I'm not a smartwatch techie to describe the technical excellence nor recommend the best in town. But I have been using for a while and would say for sure, smartwatches are awesome. If you have plans to buy one, don't hesitate and go for it. The clock is ticking!!!

Returning to work after a break

A career is not just grabbing a job but also contributing to the society. Every day we have to wade through a stifling competition at our workplaces. True it is a dog eat dog world. And sometimes there comes an inevitable break too. It can be parenting, recession or sickness. Whatever the reason be, our careers are confronted to a sudden halt. Only the occasional guilt and boredom remind us our capabilities. And soon the urge to work becomes more prominent.

Why back to work:
As a SAHM mom, the idea of leaving my kid at daycare was so daunting. The first few days at work were filled with anxiety and stress. Yes, juggling a nine to five job with other household activities will indeed wear you out. But when you have a passion burning alive, all you need to remember is “This too shall pass”. It takes time for the family to accept the transition, but you will never regret not trying.

Prepping the job-hunt:
Do not rush to apply for every available vacancy. Research to understand if the requirements will suit your potential. Also, there might be a few setbacks along the way.

1.Job market labels you outdated
2.Threat from fresh young talent
3.Not meeting the expected pay

So gear up to face these challenges. With various options like taking up short-term courses, certifications, freelance gigs and voluntary work, you can fill up the gap easily. And you have to plan ahead for getting childcare or other arrangements before signing up.

Make Social Connections:

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent."John Donne

Talk to your friends, former colleagues and bosses, they can guide you to catch up  the trends and might offer a referral too. And there is the mighty internet. In an article, Forbes suggests that the current corporate culture prefers social sites like Linkedin for job-hunts, as they are more efficient and successful. In some sites, you can even interact directly with the employer.

Pick that suits best:
To jumpstart your career, it is vital to make a choice that suits your lifestyle. With additional priorities and a need for work-life balance, try occupations with fewer restrictions. Websites such as career mums, gumtree post local ads that offer part-time, flexible and freelance options. In a way, it can give room for adapting to the change.

It’s all about You:
Reapplying a job is truly an adventure and descriptions like a long break, less experience, new technology, unknown fields might deter our ambitions. But remember no matter what, just keep trying if that holds the key to your happiness. Yes, Job-hunt is like fighting the star wars and let The Force Awakens;)

Desk Jobs: Winning the rat-race

Use only pencil, paper and brain. What is 4358 * 291=? Got the answer or still thinking? Most people will say, "Why do such a trivial task? Just key in the digits to some device, Bingo! problem solved". So if machines can do, you don't have the need to try it. With such diverse technology, our lifestyle has become more advanced with  4G data feeds, Roomba cleaners, self-driving cars and many more to come. Sad but true, science has also made mankind lazy by wielding its sceptre for decades. We are so dependent and helpless on our gadgets to not even demand a trial by combat. So how is this relevant to a desk job? Scroll further then:)

"A good neighbour is one who doesn't put a password on his wi-fi."  memequotes.com

A typical graduate's life goal after spending years of rote learning and taking notes consists of: landing on a 9 to 5 job, save the money, buy a few comforts and work for the rest of your life paying its mortgages. If your dream is exceptional such as to save the planet or eradicate poverty, don't worry you will end up to be a freelancer like me. Yeah, great job! No boss, no rules and sometimes no work too:)

So if you are lucky enough, as wiki defines, settle for a well-paying career inside a workplace cramped between cubicles and computer screens. In a few weeks, as your entire team bustles around to be the next guardians of the galaxy, you will realise your only soulful company will be the powder-crammed coffee machine.

Do You Work Happily?
Invariably you are glued to your monitors labouring endless hours with no time left to kill. These slot machines leave you digitally omnipresent while your task list gets constantly overloaded. Only when tight schedules, health issues, and internal politics creep up, your life gets the wake-up call.

survey taken worldwide suggests 28-56 % workers are dissatisfied with their jobs and majority are least happy with what they currently do. If your once dream job gives you now stress or frustration with no progress, it is high time you were out of this limbo. Don't tell me again, work more! toil more! That's pretty outdated.

"Doing nothing is very hard to do…you never know when you’re finished "~Leslie Nielsen

How can you win this rat-race? Try these tips that some have quoted from their pages of life.

1. Moonlighting your Work:
Yes! Cheat your job. Not which that gets you to pretend working or imprisoned for forgery. When fatigued with your career, searching for a new one is tedious and unfruitful in a rotten job market. So give a start for a side job. It can be a serious business or some long forgotten passion. And any small progress in your little venture is worthy to retain your peace at the main job.

Also read my other article on what's stopping your career progress. 5 Workplace Mistakes That Cripple Your Growth.

2. Welcome the Changes:
An usual aphorism but never untrue. Change is the only constant thing that keeps us going. It need not be a rarity nor a miracle like hoping for the History channel to air a few historical shows and not pawn stars, just kidding:) A variety sure adds more spice. It can be a new friendship, a healthier lifestyle, more family time or a less cluttered workspace. How boring it will be if there are no change of seasons, only summer or only snow? So open your mind to accept minor changes that liberates you from major havoc causing issues.

"Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change." ~Jim Rohn

3. Never hit Complacency:
Our human nature aspires to get the hang of anything. You put all your efforts and try to master the skill. But once you learn the ropes, the growth stops there. Getting self-contented is good only to a lesser limit.

Sheryl Sandberg: this techie woman currently COO of Facebook, has survived all odds, headed the boards in top notch companies (Walt Disney, Google) and a constant source of surprise and inspiration to me. Successful people like her are not just lucky, they never cease trying. Their greed to reach for more is only productive compared to just slouching on the same spot under satisfied notions.

4.Accept the risks:
Risks are scary and unpredictable, when mixed with careers all the more jeopardizing. In an unstable economy where retrenchment and pink slips are common terms, every employee must be prepared to face the reality.

This BenStiller movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty showcases how your life after a layoff can turn into an extraordinary adventure. So never lose heart. Update your knowledge and be indispensable at your workplace to secure your job. However, in the long run, keep your eyes and mind open and strive for the best available opportunity.

Use technology to your advantage. Trust your guts and take the step. Even if not 100 percent successful, you won't regret trying than end up saying " who moved my cheese?".

Lion moms - The Battle of Pride

(Lion Moms- Are Singaporean moms setting up a new trend?)
A recent news item in Straits Times went viral where an English composition of a Primary1 student was debated for correct grammar. This is not the first time, earlier the 'Cheryl's birthday' question was also argued over its complexity. Besides hitting such headlines, the island always enters a state of frenzy when PSLE is around the corner. All these prove Singaporeans are very much involved in their kids upbringing and education. And the new generation mothers are fully aware and geared up to their call of duty.

The Clash of clans:
Call it a battle of elite minds with only two motives: 1) Better grades in schools 2) Keeping up with peers. From tuitions, enrichment courses to preparing for GEP, children are kept busy round the clock. Equally parents also break their backs to get through this maze. Families are willing to compromise their comforts only to enroll their kid into a top- ranked school they aimed for. So what drives the need for this societal constraint?

Mom: Finish your work, then you can play…
Child: huh
Mom: The Piano!

How our parenting differs:
In general, Asian style of parenting is way different from the west. It involves pure hard work, continuous practice, and discipline. For an outsider, this appears over-taxing. Mothers become tyrannical when dealing with their kids. There are strict rules that can never be ignored at all.

Stanford article suggests that Asian children are mostly mollycoddled and interdependent with their parents. On the contrary, their western counterparts are very much independent. Good news: both the types settle down well. Yet, largely motivated by their parents, Asian kids do better when coping with difficulties. So does that mean Asian moms are superior?

Gambling on little minds:
In the book, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, the author convinces us with his notion that a '10,000-hour rule' is fair enough to make you an expert in your field. The Beatles he points out had spent an amassing play time of more than 10,000 hours before making their first hit album.

So it is neither magic nor an innate IQ. Only laborious efforts and self-mastery created the stereotypical academic success of the Asian students.  But wait, nothing can be flawless. By giving less focus on emotional growth or individual creativity, we may churn out only educated robots. What if we make a room full of Einsteins but not a single Picasso? What if all our toiling efforts are only to teach our kids to be ‘kiasu’ like us?

 Mom sends text  to son:
"Did you finish your laundry?"
"Don't forget to turn off aircon."
"We are going to grandma's house."
"Dad and I talked, we are planning to get you a car next month."
"U are??? omg thanks, mom.", replies son.
"No, we are not,  just wanted to check if you got my msgs.". Moms win!!!

Balancing the strive forward:
Yes, we all strive to create that proper environment for our children, help them build a stable life. But are we setting the right balance? Amy Chua, the writer behind the tiger mother concept, insists on her parent's technique of using threats and punishments as the only solution to train her own children. Every kid is unique. And so what worked for Amy Chua might not work for your kid or mine.

As moms, our intentions are fairly good but it doesn't necessitate we follow the same old tactics our parents deployed. Being a mom is a gift and a credit by itself and your kid’s achievements is not the yardstick to determine if you are a better parent or not. what matters most is the life and bond we share with each other.  Phew! It's time for my kid's homework, catch you soon.
